The Business Energy Saving Team (BEST) is a North East initiative helping small and medium-sized businesses reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. Funded by the UK Government, the scheme offers free energy assessments and grant funding of up to 50% for eligible projects across Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, and Gateshead.

Grants can support many improvements, including solar PV systems. Funding is based on technology type and location, with contributions of up to £25,000 available for qualifying installations. Octopus LogoOctopus Go

Octopus Go is a popular electric vehicle (EV) tariff that offers super-low overnight electricity prices. Typically, customers get around four hours of very cheap electricity (usually between 00:30 and 04:30), making it ideal for charging an EV or running energy-hungry appliances during off-peak hours. The rest of the day is charged at a standard unit rate. The key benefit is significant cost savings for EV owners, but it can also suit solar battery owners looking to top-up overnight at low prices.

Octopus Flux is a smart export tariff ideal for solar and battery owners. It offers higher rates for exporting electricity back to the grid during peak times (usually in the evening) and lower import rates overnight. The tariff is time-of-use, meaning import and export prices vary by time of day. This structure encourages users to consume energy when it is cheaper and export when demand (and payments) are higher, maximising the value of a home battery or solar setup.

Octopus Agile is a dynamic time-of-use tariff where electricity prices change every half hour based on wholesale market rates. This means prices can be extremely low (even negative at times) during periods of high renewable generation and low demand, but can rise during peak usage. Agile is best suited to tech-savvy customers who can shift their usage to low-cost times, such as smart home users, solar battery owners, or those with automation tools.

Octopus Outgoing is a solar export tariff that pays customers for the electricity they send back to the grid. E.ON Next Drive is a dual-rate tariff designed for electric vehicle owners. I want to reduce my bills, but is Solar PV still a good investment?

Most Solar PV systems are grid-connected, allowing electricity generated by your panels to be used instantly within your home or business. This reduces the amount of electricity you import from the grid, directly lowering your energy bills. Any excess electricity not used is exported automatically and can generate income through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), depending on your chosen energy supplier.

  1. You can receive SEG payments for electricity exported back to the national grid.
  2. The electricity you generate and use reduces your reliance on imported power, protecting you against rising energy prices.
  3. Solar energy significantly reduces your carbon footprint.

Solar PV systems consist of three main elements:

The inverter converts the direct current (DC) electricity produced by the panels into alternating current (AC) electricity, compatible with your property's mains supply. Modern inverters include integrated safety monitoring systems that automatically disconnect in the event of grid faults, ensuring full compliance with UK regulations.

The inverter feeds electricity directly into your distribution board, meaning your home uses solar energy first before drawing from the grid — maximising efficiency and reducing bills.

Do PV systems work in the UK?

Yes. Solar PV systems perform effectively across the UK climate. While output varies seasonally, modern high-efficiency panels generate electricity even during overcast conditions. The current 0% VAT rate on residential solar and battery installations remains in place until 31 March 2027, making this a key window for homeowners considering installation before the rate reverts.

How is the solar electricity used?

The electricity generated is fed directly into your property's existing electrical circuits via the distribution board. There is no difference in quality between solar-generated electricity and grid electricity — the only difference is reduced reliance on external suppliers.

What happens if the system generates more than the building is using?

Any excess electricity is automatically exported to the grid. Exported energy is measured via your smart meter and can generate SEG payments depending on your energy tariff.

How long will my PV system last?

Most solar panels carry 25–30 year performance warranties, and inverters typically carry warranties between 5–20 years depending on the manufacturer. Many systems installed decades ago are still operational. Proper design, installation and servicing ensure long-term reliability.

What range of roof pitch is acceptable?

The ideal roof pitch is between 30° and 45°. However, systems installed between 5° and 60° still perform effectively, with only minor efficiency variance depending on orientation and shading. During your survey, we calculate precise projected output based on your specific roof characteristics.

We would like a PV system, but have heard they are costly and will take years to repay?

Systems are designed to suit individual budgets and energy needs. The current 0% VAT rate (ending 31 March 2027) reduces upfront costs for residential installations. Combined with bill savings and SEG income, many homeowners see strong returns, although actual performance depends on system size, usage and energy tariffs.

Do I need planning permission?

Most residential solar PV systems fall under permitted development rights. Listed buildings, conservation areas and certain protected zones may require additional approvals. We advise accordingly during your survey.

Do PV systems need regular maintenance or servicing?

Solar PV systems have minimal moving parts, but periodic servicing is recommended to ensure electrical connections, roof fixings and system performance remain optimal. Keeping panels clean and systems inspected protects long-term output and warranty conditions.

What is a Solar PV panel?

Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into electricity using silicon cells. These cells create an electric field when exposed to light, generating usable electrical current. Panels are sealed within tempered glass and aluminium frames to ensure durability and long-term weather resistance.

What's the life expectancy of a PV system?

A well-installed solar PV system can operate effectively for 25–40 years. Degradation rates are low, and performance warranties guarantee minimum output levels over time.

What if my roof is shaded?

Shading can reduce performance, but modern systems use optimisers or microinverters to minimise impact. During your survey, we conduct shading analysis to ensure accurate performance projections.

Do I need to inform my electricity supplier if I have a PV system installed?

Yes. Your electricity supplier must be notified once the system is commissioned. We assist with the necessary documentation.

Can I heat my water with a PV system?

Yes. Solar diverters can direct surplus electricity to immersion heaters, allowing you to use excess solar generation to heat water efficiently.

What are monocrystalline and polycrystalline cells?

These terms describe the type of silicon used in panel construction. Monocrystalline panels are typically more efficient and uniform in appearance, while polycrystalline panels are slightly less efficient but cost-effective. Modern installations predominantly use high-efficiency monocrystalline technology.

How is a system sized?
