Subcontracted Solar Installations: Risks to Check Before You Sign

Using subcontractors does not automatically make a solar installation poor quality. Competent specialist subcontractors can deliver excellent work. The real risk appears when the customer cannot tell who owns the design, who is responsible for MCS compliance, who controls changes made on site, and who will return if a problem develops later.
At Sustainable Energy Engineering, we think the customer should be able to follow one clear line of accountability from survey and design through installation, commissioning and aftercare. Whether every person on site is directly employed is less important than whether the contracting and technical responsibilities are explicit.
Subcontracted Solar: The Short Answer
- Subcontracting is not a quality test on its own. The competence, controls and responsibility structure matter.
- The contracting party should be clear. You should know which business took your money and is responsible for delivering the agreed installation.
- The MCS responsibility should be clear. Ask which certified contractor is responsible for the MCS installation and certificate.
- Design changes need technical control. Moving panels, changing strings or substituting equipment should not happen without checking performance and electrical compatibility.
- Aftercare should have one front door. The customer should not be bounced between a salesperson, subcontractor, manufacturer and warranty company while nobody owns diagnosis.
The Risk Is Fragmented Accountability, Not the Employment Contract
A large solar project can involve roofers, electricians, scaffolders, commissioning engineers and specialist designers. Multiple trades are normal. Problems arise when the boundaries between them are poorly managed.
For a domestic solar panel installation, we want the customer to know who approved the final array layout, who verified the roof and mounting approach, who designed the DC and AC electrical system, who submitted any network paperwork, and who signed the system off.
Ask Who the MCS Contractor Is
MCS certification is not simply a logo to display on a quotation. Current MIS 3002 requirements place responsibilities on the MCS Contractor for system design, installation, commissioning and handover. If a sales company uses another business to carry out the certified work, the customer should understand that relationship before signing.
A Useful Contract Question
“Which legal entity is my contracting installer, and which MCS-certified contractor will take responsibility for the completed system?” If the answer is unclear before payment, it is unlikely to become clearer after a fault.
Risk 1: Design and Site Installation Become Two Separate Jobs
Solar design is not finished when a drawing is emailed to the installer. Site conditions can reveal vent positions, roof dimensions, shading, structural details, cable-route constraints and electrical issues that were not obvious from remote imagery.
MCS 032 requires performance estimation to take orientation, inclination and shading into account. If the array is materially changed on site, the energy estimate and electrical design may need to be reviewed. A team should not simply “make it fit” and leave the original performance figures untouched.
Risk 2: Equipment Is Substituted Without Rechecking the System
A panel of similar wattage is not necessarily an electrical equivalent. Voltage, current, dimensions, mounting zones and connector requirements can differ. The same applies to inverters and batteries.
Equivalent Wattage Is Not Equivalent Design
If a quoted component is unavailable, we expect the replacement to be checked against the string voltage, MPPT current, roof layout, mounting specification, monitoring architecture and warranty position. A substitution should be documented, not improvised.
Risk 3: The Customer Does Not Know Who Owns Workmanship
If there is a roof leak, cable defect or commissioning problem, the customer should not need to negotiate between several businesses to discover who will inspect it. The contract and workmanship warranty should identify the responsible party and the complaint route.
RECC’s current Consumer Code and MCS’s complaints policy both reinforce the importance of clear consumer information and accountable delivery. Those frameworks do not mean every dispute is automatically resolved, but they provide useful standards against which the arrangement can be checked.
Risk 4: Handover Information Is Incomplete
Good handover is a technical control. The owner needs enough information to operate the system safely, understand monitoring, identify equipment and support future maintenance or warranty claims. A fragmented project can fail at this final stage because each business assumes somebody else supplied the paperwork.
What We Would Expect in a Clear Handover
- final system specification and layout;
- MCS certificate where applicable;
- commissioning and test documentation;
- DNO/network documentation where applicable;
- product datasheets and warranty information;
- workmanship warranty/consumer-protection documents;
- monitoring access and basic operating instructions;
- shutdown/isolation information;
- contact route for faults and aftercare.
Risk 5: Aftercare Depends on the Individual Who Happened to Fit It
Installations should be supported by a business process, not by whether the same engineer is still available. The contracting company should retain system records and be able to investigate later faults even if the original site team changes.
Before choosing an installer, the company’s history, technical approach and support reputation are relevant. Our company background and customer feedback help customers assess how we operate, but the written contract remains the basis of the job.
What a Well-Managed Subcontracted Installation Can Look Like
There is nothing inherently wrong with a certified contractor using specialists. A well-managed project can have a principal contracting party, controlled design, named competent installers, documented changes, inspection, commissioning and a single aftercare route. In that situation the customer receives the benefit of specialist skills without losing accountability.
That is why we avoid blanket claims that subcontracted systems “always underperform”. There is no credible basis for treating employment status as a performance metric. We judge the engineering and management controls instead.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Our Recommendation: Follow the Accountability Chain
Do not reject a solar quotation purely because specialist subcontractors are involved, and do not accept one purely because a company says it uses only direct labour. Ask who owns each technical and contractual responsibility and whether that chain remains intact after installation day.
Remote Design Needs a Site-Verification Step
Remote imagery can be useful for early layout work, but a roof drawing does not reveal everything. Tile condition, rafter locations, existing electrical equipment, cable routes, shading obstructions and access constraints can all change the final installation. The responsible contractor needs a process for reconciling the proposal with what is found on site.
That matters particularly in subcontracted delivery because the site team may be the first people to see a constraint. Their feedback must reach somebody with authority to recheck the design, not be solved by an undocumented improvised change.
Quality Control Should Be Visible in the Process
A strong delivery model has checks before, during and after installation. Examples include confirming the module layout before rails are fixed, checking cable support and connector mating, verifying labels and protection, reviewing inverter settings, confirming monitoring, and completing commissioning records before handover.

Price Pressure Can Expose Weak Handoffs
Subcontracting often becomes a concern when a sales organisation treats installation as a fixed-price commodity and pushes risk down the chain. If the site team has little time for survey discrepancies or cannot authorise the right extra work, the incentive can become “finish the job” rather than “finish the design correctly”.
This is not inevitable, but it is why customers should ask about change control, not just installer employment status. A well-managed subcontract can budget for genuine site variation and still maintain one accountable technical owner.
Aftercare Is Where Fragmentation Becomes Most Visible
Imagine a battery stops communicating eighteen months later. The manufacturer may say the installer must diagnose it; the subcontractor may say they only supplied labour; the sales business may direct the customer back to the manufacturer. A good contract prevents that loop by stating who owns first-line support and escalation.
Our Test of Accountability
If a customer can describe the fault in one email to the contracting installer and that business takes responsibility for diagnosis and the correct escalation route, the delivery chain is functioning. If the customer must work out which subcontractor fitted which component, the chain is too fragmented.
