Solar Warranty Chains: Installer vs Manufacturer Responsibility

A solar system does not have one single warranty. Protection is normally split between the installer’s workmanship responsibilities, manufacturer product and performance warranties, and any insurance-backed or consumer-code protection that applies to the contract. Which route matters depends on what has actually failed.
At Sustainable Energy Engineering, we think the warranty chain should be understandable before installation, not discovered after a fault. A customer needs to know who designed the system, who installed it, who supplied each major component, who handles the first call if something goes wrong and what happens if one of those businesses later stops trading.
Solar Warranties: The Short Answer
- Workmanship and installation faults normally sit with the installer/contracting party. Examples include defective mounting details, poor cabling or installation work that does not match the agreed design.
- Product defects normally sit within the relevant manufacturer warranty. The exact terms, duration, exclusions and claims process vary by product.
- Panel performance warranties are not whole-system yield guarantees. They usually relate to a module’s warranted power retention under specified terms.
- Consumer protection can sit around the warranty chain. RECC requirements include protection relating to deposits and workmanship warranties for members, while MCS has a complaints framework for certified installations.
- Good records are essential. Contract, MCS certificate, commissioning documents, serial numbers, warranties, monitoring history and photographs can all make a later claim easier to diagnose.
Why the Warranty Chain Matters More Than the Longest Number
A “30-year warranty” can sound reassuring, but the number is only useful if you know what it covers. A long panel power warranty does not necessarily cover labour, scaffolding, removal and refitting, an inverter fault, roof damage, communications hardware or a problem caused by the original design.
That is why we compare warranty scope as well as duration when specifying solar PV systems. The strongest package is one where the customer can identify the responsible route for the likely failure modes rather than relying on a single headline.

Manufacturer Product Warranties
Product warranties cover defects within the manufacturer’s stated terms. Those terms vary significantly: they can define eligible defects, excluded causes, claim windows, required evidence, transferability, remedy and whether the manufacturer supplies a replacement product, repair, credit or another solution.
We do not tell customers that every panel, inverter or battery has the same warranty because that would be inaccurate. The relevant datasheet and warranty document for the exact model should be retained with the handover pack.
Performance Warranties Are Not Annual-Generation Guarantees
Panel performance warranties typically concern how much of the module’s rated power is warranted to remain after defined periods and under defined conditions. They do not mean the complete array is guaranteed to produce a fixed number of kWh every year.
Low Generation Does Not Automatically Mean a Panel-Warranty Claim
Annual yield can change because of weather, shading, soiling, availability, inverter behaviour, clipping, changes to nearby trees or buildings, faults elsewhere in the system and changes to the original configuration. Diagnosis comes before warranty attribution.
Installer Workmanship and System Responsibility
The installer’s role covers much more than physically attaching equipment. Current MCS requirements address design, installation, commissioning, handover and the integration of PV with the building and electrical system. If the problem is rooted in workmanship or installation, a manufacturer should not be expected to resolve it simply because its logo is on the panel.

What RECC Protection Adds
The Renewable Energy Consumer Code sets consumer-protection requirements for member businesses. Its current information explains protection for deposits and advance payments and insurance-backed protection for workmanship warranties if a member ceases trading, subject to the applicable scheme terms.
This is different from saying RECC “warrants the panels”. It is part of the consumer-protection framework around the transaction and workmanship commitments.
What Happens If the Installer Has Stopped Trading?
Start with the records. Identify the contracting business, MCS certificate, RECC membership position at the time of contract, insurance-backed warranty documents and manufacturer warranty information. A replacement installer can inspect the system, but it should not promise that somebody else’s warranty will pay before the contractual position and cause of failure are established.
Energy Saving Trust also recommends checking the MCS certificate, warranties and maintenance history when a property with solar changes hands. Those records become particularly valuable when the original installer is no longer involved.
MCS Complaints and Technical Issues
MCS’s current complaints policy covers a range of certified-installation issues, including concerns about incorrect or unsafe installation, underperformance, incomplete work, commissioning and handover, property damage, product issues and contractual matters. The available route depends on the circumstances and does not replace the need to use the installer’s own complaint procedure where appropriate.
The Documents We Would Want a Customer to Keep
Solar Warranty File
- signed contract, quotation and final system specification;
- MCS certificate and DNO/network documentation where applicable;
- commissioning and electrical test records;
- panel, inverter, battery and optimiser model/serial numbers;
- manufacturer product and performance warranty documents;
- installer workmanship warranty and insurance-backed warranty evidence;
- roof/mounting warranty information where relevant;
- monitoring login and historic generation data;
- installation photographs and later service reports;
- records of any replacement parts or configuration changes.
How We Judge a Warranty Before Recommending Equipment
We look beyond the number of years. We consider who provides support in the UK, what evidence a claim requires, whether labour or logistics are addressed, whether the warranty is transferable, how degradation is defined, what exclusions apply and how practical the route is for an installer to administer.
Customer experience also matters. Our customer reviews provide one form of evidence about how we support installations in the real world, but the contract and written warranty terms remain the documents that define legal and commercial obligations.
Our Recommendation: Buy a Support Chain, Not Just Equipment
The best warranty arrangement is not necessarily the product with the longest headline. It is a system where product choice, installer accountability, certification, handover information and aftercare form a clear chain. That makes a future fault easier to diagnose and gives the customer a much clearer route to resolution.
Product Warranty and Power Warranty Should Be Read Side by Side
A module can have a long linear power warranty while its product warranty is governed by a different document and set of terms. A power-warranty claim normally requires evidence that the module’s measured output has fallen below the warranted curve for reasons covered by the warranty. A visible manufacturing defect, meanwhile, may fall under the product warranty route instead.
For inverters and batteries, the structure is different again. Capacity retention, throughput, cycle limits, environmental limits or operating-mode conditions may affect cover. There is no safe shortcut such as “everything is guaranteed for 25 years”.
Warranty Responsibility Can Change When a System Is Altered
Adding panels, replacing an inverter, changing a battery, moving modules for roof work or fitting third-party control equipment can all affect the future support chain. That does not mean upgrades are a problem; it means the party carrying out the change should document what was altered and whether any existing warranty conditions are affected.
We also want the final drawings and settings to match the system that is actually on site. A warranty diagnosis becomes harder if the handover pack describes an old configuration that no longer exists.
Why Monitoring History Is Valuable Evidence
A single screenshot of low output rarely proves a product defect. A longer monitoring history can show when a fault first appeared, whether one string diverged from another, whether an inverter repeatedly disconnected, or whether performance changed after a known event. That can turn a vague complaint into a focused technical investigation.
Good Warranty Evidence Reduces Guesswork
Serial numbers identify the exact product; commissioning records establish the original configuration; photographs show the installed condition; monitoring shows the operational history; and a diagnostic report links the symptom to a probable cause. Together, those records make it much easier to approach the correct warranty provider.
What We Would Treat as Warranty Red Flags Before Purchase
- a quotation that states a warranty length but does not supply the actual terms;
- no explanation of who pays for labour or access if a component must be changed;
- unclear transfer rules if the property is sold;
- a manufacturer support route that depends entirely on one salesperson;
- no workmanship-warranty or insurance-backed-warranty documentation;
- an installer unable to explain who handles the first diagnosis if the fault could be either product or workmanship.
