How to Get Rid of Pigeons Under Solar Panels in the UK

The usual long-term solution to pigeons under solar panels is to exclude access to the gap with a properly fitted mesh or purpose-designed barrier, but only after checking that the work can be carried out lawfully and without disturbing an active protected nest.
At Sustainable Energy Engineering, we treat pigeon issues as a roof, solar and wildlife problem together. The barrier must not damage the modules, interfere with drainage or ventilation, trap birds under the array or create unsafe roof work.
The legal point is important: wild birds, their eggs and nests in use or being built are protected. A pest-control objective does not make it acceptable to remove an active nest without the appropriate legal basis.

Pigeons Under Solar Panels: The Short Answer
- Do not block birds in under the array. Confirm the space is clear before closing access points.
- Do not remove or damage an active nest. Wild bird nests in use or being built are protected by law.
- Physical exclusion is normally more dependable than temporary scare tactics. A correctly fitted perimeter mesh prevents re-entry without needing to pierce the panel frame.
- Use competent roof access. Solar arrays are often near roof edges and roof work is high risk.
- Inspect the solar system at the same time. Nest material and fouling can hide cable damage, blocked drainage or roof defects.
Why Pigeons Choose the Space Under Solar Panels
Roof-mounted panels can create a sheltered void protected from wind and some weather. Once birds establish a nesting site, the same location can attract repeated activity and accumulation of nesting material and fouling.
The problem is therefore better solved by controlling access to the void than by repeatedly cleaning droppings while leaving the shelter available.
Check for an Active Nest Before Any Exclusion Work
GOV.UK guidance explains that wild birds, nests and eggs are protected. The Wildlife and Countryside Act makes it an offence to take, damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it is in use or being built, subject to the legislation s provisions and any lawful licensing route.
Do Not Seal an Occupied Array
A mesh barrier should never be fitted in a way that traps adult birds or dependent young under the modules. If there is an active nest, obtain appropriate professional/wildlife advice and wait or proceed only under a lawful route.
Why Mesh Exclusion Is Usually the Practical Long-Term Method
A purpose-designed mesh can close the perimeter gap while leaving the modules in place. Correctly installed, it does not need to be screwed through the module frame or roof covering. Clips or compatible fixing methods should be selected for the actual mounting system.
The detail matters. A loose edge can become an entry point; overly tight or poorly positioned material can interfere with roof drainage or cabling.
What We Check Before Fitting a Barrier
- whether any active nest, eggs or dependent young are present;
- module frame depth and the gap between array and roof;
- mounting rails, hooks and accessible fixing positions;
- roof covering condition around the array;
- DC cable routing and any visible signs of abrasion or damage;
- guttering, valleys and drainage paths that must remain clear;
- safe roof-access requirements and whether scaffold or other protection is needed.
Remove Nesting Material Only When It Is Lawful to Do So
Old nesting material and fouling can retain moisture and hide the condition of roof coverings and cables. Once the area is legally clear to work on, debris can be removed carefully and the roof inspected before exclusion is installed.
The objective is not simply appearance. We want the space under the array clear enough to assess whether birds have displaced cables, damaged clips or contributed to blocked drainage.
Why We Avoid Damage to Solar Module Frames
Drilling or screwing through a module frame can create warranty and corrosion concerns and may compromise the product. We favour systems intended for solar arrays that can be secured without modifying the module itself.
Before installing any third-party barrier, the mounting arrangement and module manufacturer requirements should be considered. One generic fixing method does not suit every system.
Do Ultrasonic Devices, Plastic Predators or Spikes Work?
We do not base our solar recommendation on scare devices because their effectiveness can be inconsistent and they do not physically close the protected void under the array. If the objective is to stop birds nesting beneath panels, a well-designed exclusion barrier directly addresses the access route.
Spikes may have uses on ledges in some pest-management settings, but they are not a substitute for closing the entire perimeter gap where pigeons are already getting under modules.
What About Fouling on the Panel Surface?
Bird droppings on the glass can create local soiling. After the nesting problem is resolved, panels can be cleaned using safe, non-abrasive methods. Energy Saving Trust recommends solar cleaning as part of maintenance where dirt and fouling are present, while ordinary tilted arrays are often partly cleaned by rain.
Do not climb onto the roof simply to wash the panels. If the array cannot be safely reached from ground level, professional access is the right solution.
Could Pigeons Damage Solar Cables?
Any evidence of chewed, abraded, displaced or hanging cable deserves proper electrical assessment. Cables under modules are exposed to years of UV, temperature cycling and movement, and bird activity can add another mechanical risk.
If insulation appears damaged, do not touch it or spray water around it. Arrange a competent solar/electrical inspection.
Why Roof Safety Matters During Pigeon Proofing
HSE describes roof work as highly dangerous. Pigeon-proofing often requires access around the lower and side edges of an array, exactly where fall risks can be significant. The work needs suitable planning, access equipment and competent people.
The desire to save the cost of professional access is not a reason to work from an unsecured ladder or climb across modules.

Our Recommendation for Existing Pigeon Problems
Do not treat the issue as a quick cosmetic fix. Establish whether birds are actively nesting, deal with the area lawfully, clear debris when permitted, inspect the solar installation and then fit a durable exclusion system that suits the specific mounting arrangement.
If the birds have been present for a long time, use the opportunity to inspect the system rather than hiding potential cable or roof problems behind new mesh.
