How Much Are Solar Panels in the UK?

A complete domestic solar PV system currently costs several thousand pounds, and the most useful national benchmark is around £7,600 for an average 4.5 kWp home system. That figure is a starting point, not a fixed tariff. Roof access, module choice, inverter design, scaffolding, electrical work, monitoring, export controls and whether battery storage is included can all change the installed price.

How Much Are Solar Panels? The Short Answer
- Current independent guidance uses around £7,600 for an average 4.5 kWp domestic system.
- The installed system matters more than the panel unit price. Inverter, mounting, scaffold, cabling, protection, design and commissioning are all part of the cost.
- An average 4.5 kWp system is commonly around 12 panels and 20-30 m2 of roof area.
- Qualifying residential solar installations are currently subject to temporary zero-rate VAT until 31 March 2027.
- A cheaper quote is only better if the system specification, performance estimate, workmanship and aftercare remain comparable.
What Is a Realistic Solar Panel Cost in 2026?
The best current national consumer benchmark is approximately £7,600 for a typical 4.5 kWp home solar system. We use that as context when customers ask what solar costs, but our quotations are based on the actual property rather than a national average.
A straightforward pitched-roof installation with clean access and a standard string design will not cost the same as a multi-roof property with complex scaffolding, split orientations, difficult cable routes or extensive electrical upgrades.
What Is Included in the Price of a Solar Installation?

Panel Price Is Not System Price
A low module price can make a quotation look attractive, but the panels are only one part of a compliant solar installation. We pay equal attention to the mounting detail, inverter operating window, cable design, protection, roof condition and the predicted energy yield.
How System Size Changes Cost
Larger systems require more modules and mounting hardware, but the installed price does not normally rise in a perfectly straight line. Some costs, such as scaffold mobilisation, design, commissioning and part of the electrical work, are already present on a smaller installation. That means the cost per installed kWp can sometimes improve as system size increases.
That does not mean we automatically fill every available roof. We compare expected generation with annual electricity use, daytime demand, export value, battery strategy and future loads such as EV charging or a heat pump.
Why Two 4.5 kWp Quotes Can Cost Different Amounts
- Panel technology: higher-wattage or premium modules can alter equipment cost and roof utilisation.
- Inverter architecture: string, hybrid, optimiser or microinverter approaches have different hardware and labour requirements.
- Roof geometry: multiple roof faces, valleys, dormers and awkward access can increase installation time.
- Electrical condition: older consumer units, long cable routes or meter arrangements may require additional work.
- Scaffolding: conservatories, extensions, narrow access or several elevations can change access cost.
- Storage and backup: batteries, backup circuits and changeover equipment add scope beyond the PV array itself.
What Does Zero-Rate VAT Mean for Solar?
Under current HMRC rules, qualifying installed solar panels in residential accommodation benefit from temporary zero-rate VAT. The current temporary period runs to 31 March 2027. The relief applies to the installation and can include equipment essential to the PV system, such as cabling, controls and the inverter, where the conditions are met.
This is one reason an old price guide can quickly become misleading. A quotation should show the current VAT treatment clearly rather than reusing figures from a previous tax period.
How We Decide Whether a More Expensive Panel Is Worth It
We look at the roof as a constrained energy asset. If roof area is limited, a higher-wattage module may allow more kWp to be installed in the same space. If the roof has ample area and the electrical design is the real constraint, paying more for the highest panel wattage may not improve the financial result.
We also compare warranty support, module dimensions, current/voltage characteristics, temperature behaviour and compatibility with the chosen inverter. The right module is the one that fits the complete design.
How Much Roof Space Does a Typical System Need?
Current Energy Saving Trust guidance describes an average domestic system of around 4.5 kWp, commonly using around 12 panels and covering roughly 20-30 m2. Real layouts vary because panel dimensions, setbacks, roof obstructions and fire/weathering requirements affect usable area.
Before quoting, we prefer to establish what can safely and sensibly fit rather than multiplying a roof width by a panel count.
What Should Be in a Good Solar Quote?

Can Export Payments Improve the Financial Case?
Yes. Electricity you do not use can potentially earn export income through a Smart Export Guarantee tariff if the installation and metering meet the relevant criteria. Suppliers set their own rates and contract terms, so we do not build a quotation around one permanent export price.
The strongest design normally starts with using solar where it has the greatest value to the customer, then considers storage and export as part of the wider energy strategy.
Our View on Solar Panel Prices
A solar quote should answer two questions: what are we installing, and what is it expected to do? Price matters, but it should be compared alongside system size, yield, self-consumption, equipment quality, installation method and long-term support.
We are comfortable explaining why a system costs what it costs. If a component or design choice does not add useful value, it should not be there simply to make the proposal look more sophisticated.
