Do Smart Meters Work with Solar Panels?

Yes. Smart meters can work with solar panels, and for many households they make it easier to separate the electricity you buy from the grid from the electricity you export. The important point is that a smart meter is not the same thing as your solar monitoring system: your meter measures electricity crossing the grid connection, while your inverter or solar app measures what the PV system generates.
At Sustainable Energy Engineering, we explain this distinction during handover because it prevents one of the most common sources of confusion after a solar installation: a homeowner sees one figure on the inverter app and another on the smart-meter display and assumes something is wrong.

Smart Meter + Solar: The Short Answer
- Your solar panels can generate electricity whether or not you have a smart meter.
- The smart meter records electricity imported from the grid and, where correctly configured, can also provide export readings.
- Your solar inverter or monitoring platform measures generation; the smart meter measures electricity flowing across the grid boundary.
- For the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), exported electricity must be metered. Ofgem says SEG payments are calculated from export meter readings.
- Your in-home display normally focuses on electricity bought from the supplier, so it may not show total solar generation.
What Does a Smart Meter Actually Measure?
A smart electricity meter sits at the point where your property connects to the public electricity supply. Its primary job is to measure imported electricity accurately and send readings to your supplier automatically. In a solar home, electricity can also flow in the opposite direction when generation exceeds the property's immediate demand.
That is why the language matters:

Why the In-Home Display Can Look Wrong After Solar Is Installed
Smart Energy GB notes that the in-home display will usually show the electricity you are buying from your supplier rather than everything your solar panels generate. That is not a fault. If the house is using 2kW while the panels are producing 1.5kW, only around 0.5kW needs to come from the grid, so the smart-meter display may show a much smaller figure than the solar app.
Likewise, when the panels are producing more than the house is using, the property may be exporting. The inverter app can show strong generation while the in-home display shows little or no grid import.
A Simple Worked Example
Illustrative only: if solar generation is 3.0kW and the home is using 1.2kW, roughly 1.8kW is available to export or charge a battery, before allowing for system behaviour and losses. The smart meter does not need to display the full 3.0kW generation figure because its role is to measure what crosses the grid boundary.
Do You Need a Smart Meter to Get Paid for Solar Export?
For most modern export arrangements, a smart meter is the practical route. Ofgem's SEG rules require exported renewable electricity to be metered, and its licensee guidance says the export meter must be capable of measuring export at half-hourly intervals; Ofgem expects this to be a smart meter in most cases.
Energy Saving Trust likewise says that to sign up to an export tariff you will usually need a smart meter and proof that the solar installation is certified.
What Is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee is the Great Britain scheme under which participating electricity suppliers pay eligible small-scale generators for electricity exported to the grid. Ofgem confirms that solar PV up to the relevant scheme capacity can qualify and that suppliers set their own tariff rate, contract length and other terms, although SEG tariff rates must remain above zero.
SEG income is therefore not a fixed government rate. The tariff you choose, the amount exported and the supplier's terms all affect the payment.
Export Payments Are Not Automatic
Having solar panels and a smart meter does not automatically enrol you onto an export tariff. You normally need to apply to a supplier, satisfy its eligibility requirements and have the correct export metering arrangements in place.
Can Your Import Supplier and Export Supplier Be Different?
Yes. Ofgem states that the company paying you under SEG does not have to be the same company supplying your electricity. That can be useful when comparing export rates, but it also means you need to keep track of two separate commercial relationships.
How Smart Meters Work with Solar Battery Storage
A battery adds another energy path inside the property. Solar can supply the house, charge the battery or export. The battery can later supply the house, and in some systems it may also charge from the grid during cheaper tariff periods.
The smart meter still measures the net electricity flowing between the property and the grid. The battery's own app or energy-management system is what normally gives the detailed picture of charge level, battery power and solar-to-battery flow. Can a Smart Meter Make Solar Panels Generate More Electricity?
No. A smart meter does not increase irradiance, module efficiency or inverter output. Its value is measurement and access to smarter tariffs. It can help you make better decisions about when to use, store or export electricity, but it does not create additional solar energy.
Smart Meters and Time-of-Use Tariffs
One of the strongest reasons to combine smart metering with solar and storage is access to tariffs that vary by time of day. A battery may be charged during a low-price period and discharged later, while household loads such as EV charging or washing can be shifted to cheaper or solar-rich periods.
The economics depend on the exact tariff and system efficiency. A tariff strategy should be modelled from real consumption data rather than sold as a guaranteed saving.
Will an Older Smart Meter Still Work?
Often yes, but capability can vary. Smart Energy GB explains that older and newer smart meters can behave differently depending on supplier and configuration. If you change supplier or have legacy metering, the new supplier should be asked specifically whether it can obtain import and export readings from the meter in your property.
What Is an Export MPAN?
For SEG arrangements, an export supply point is normally identified separately from the import account. Ofgem's guidance places responsibility on the SEG licensee to ensure the generator is set up with an export MPAN associated with the meter. Homeowners do not need to become metering experts, but it is useful to understand why an export account can take time to appear after installation.
What If Your Smart Meter Shows Export as Import?
That should be investigated rather than ignored. Meter type, configuration and wiring all matter. If bills rise unexpectedly after solar is commissioned, or readings do not make sense, contact the electricity supplier and the solar installer so the metering and system data can be compared.
Do Smart Meters Replace Solar Monitoring?
No. They answer different questions. Solar monitoring tells you how the PV system is performing. Smart-meter data tells you what you are importing from and exporting to the grid. Used together, they give a much clearer picture of self-consumption.
What We Recommend Checking After Solar Installation
- the inverter/app is recording generation correctly;
- the smart meter import reading behaves sensibly when solar output changes;
- an export register or export account is available where required;
- the chosen SEG supplier has the documents it needs;
- the household understands the difference between generation, consumption, import and export;
- any battery or time-of-use tariff is configured around the actual usage pattern.
Our View: Smart Metering Is Useful, but It Is Not the Solar System
A modern smart meter is a very useful part of a solar-equipped home because it supports accurate grid-import data, export measurement and smarter tariffs. But the solar design, inverter, battery controls and monitoring platform remain separate parts of the energy system.
