Can I Put Solar Panels in My Garden in the UK?

Yes. Solar panels can be installed in a garden in the UK, but a full-size ground-mounted array is not automatically planning-permission free. In England, the permitted-development rules for stand-alone domestic solar changed on 27th August 2026. For a house, the panel area must be no more than 9m² to stay within Class B permitted development, and the maximum height is now 1m, 2m or 4m depending on where the array sits in relation to the boundary, principal elevation and protected land.

That makes garden solar a genuine option, but one that needs proper planning, electrical and structural design. At Sustainable Energy Engineering, we treat ground-mounted PV as an engineered electricity-generation system rather than simply a row of panels placed on a frame.

Garden Solar: The Short Answer

  • You can install solar panels on a suitable ground-mounted frame in a garden.
  • In England, a householder stand-alone array must be no more than 9m² to remain within the new Class B permitted-development size limit.
  • The new height limit depends on location: 1m, 2m or 4m.
  • Heritage locations, listed buildings, scheduled monuments and certain positions on article 2(3) land have tighter rules.
  • Larger arrays can still be possible, but may need a planning application.
  • The electrical connection still has to follow DNO rules, regardless of whether the panels are on a roof or in a garden.

What Changed for Garden Solar on 27th August 2026?

The most important change for homeowners in England is that the permitted-development rules for stand-alone solar were rewritten. The Planning Portal now separates the rules for houses from those for blocks of flats and introduces a location-based height test for a house.

The Planning Portal also confirms that stand-alone solar must not be installed within the boundary of a listed building or scheduled monument under this permitted-development route. World Heritage Sites and article 2(3) land have additional restrictions.

The 9m² Rule Is Easy to Miss

A 9m² panel-area limit is small compared with many modern domestic arrays. It can be only a handful of current-format modules, depending on their exact dimensions. If the system you actually need is larger, that does not mean garden solar is impossible; it means you should establish planning requirements before ordering equipment or groundwork.

There Is a Transitional Period Until August 2027

The Planning Portal says that a 12-month transitional arrangement runs to 27th August 2027. Development that fitted the rules immediately before 27th August 2026 but is no longer permitted under the new wording may, in certain circumstances, still be carried out during that transition.

Because transitional provisions are fact-specific, we would never rely on them from a generic web article alone. If your design sits close to a planning limit, the sensible approach is to confirm the position with the local planning authority before committing money.

Does the Same Planning Rule Apply Everywhere in the UK?

No. Planning is devolved. The detailed 2026 figures above are for England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland operate under their own planning frameworks, and local restrictions can apply in all nations. The principle is the same: do not assume that because the equipment is in your garden it falls outside planning control.

How We Assess a Garden for Solar

A clear patch of grass is not enough. A useful design starts with annual generation, shading and electrical constraints.

Solar resource

We look at orientation, tilt and seasonal shade. Trees that appear harmless in summer can cast long winter shadows, while future tree growth should also be considered.

Ground and drainage

The support system has to remain stable through wind, saturated ground, frost and long-term movement. The appropriate foundation depends on the site and mounting system.

Cable route

The array may be tens of metres from the consumer unit or inverter location. Cable sizing, protection, route and voltage drop are design issues, not afterthoughts.

Security and physical damage

Garden arrays are easier to reach. Mowers, strimmers, children, animals, rodents, vehicles and theft risk all influence layout and protection.

How Much Space Does a Ground-Mounted System Need?

Energy Saving Trust says the average home solar system is around 4.5kWp and typically uses roughly 20–30m² of roof surface. That is useful context: a normal whole-home array can be substantially larger than England's 9m² stand-alone permitted-development limit.

This is why the first design question should not be “how many panels can we squeeze into the garden?” It should be “how much generation does the property need, what area would that require, and what planning route applies to that design?”

Design Reality

Permitted development is not a sizing target. A 9m² array may be useful for a modest system, but a household with higher annual electricity use, an EV, heat pump or battery strategy may need more generation. Planning and electrical design should follow the energy requirement, not the other way around.

Do Ground-Mounted Panels Generate More Electricity?

Not automatically. A ground-mounted system can outperform a poor roof layout because we may be able to choose a better orientation and avoid shade. But a well-oriented, unshaded roof can perform just as well.

Generation should be modelled for the actual postcode, pitch, orientation and shading. Under the current MCS solar standard, an annual generation estimate is part of the pre-sale information for an MCS installation.

What About the Cable Run Back to the House?

Distance matters because current flowing through a cable creates losses. Correct conductor sizing keeps voltage drop and heating within acceptable limits. The cable also needs suitable mechanical protection and routing for the environment.

For a garden array, this often means an underground route or another protected installation method. We do not recommend choosing the panel location first and only then discovering that the electrical route is impractical or unnecessarily expensive.

Does a Garden Array Need DNO Approval?

Its location in the garden does not exempt it from grid-connection rules. Current MCS requirements refer installers to Engineering Recommendation G98 for installations up to and including 16A per phase and G99 above that threshold.

Energy Networks Association guidance equates 16A per phase to 3.68kW on single phase and 11.04kW on three phase for aggregate generation. Where solar and battery inverters operate in parallel, the combined position has to be considered.

For a professionally designed domestic solar PV project, grid connection is part of the design process rather than paperwork left until the end.

Can You Receive SEG Payments from Garden Solar?

Potentially, yes. Ofgem's Smart Export Guarantee covers eligible solar PV in Great Britain up to the scheme capacity limit, with payments based on metered export. For PV up to 50kW, Ofgem's generator guidance expects suitable certification of the installation and installer, normally an MCS certificate or recognised equivalent.

That is another reason a permanent grid-connected garden array should be approached as a proper generation system rather than a casual DIY project.

What About the New Plug-In Solar Rules?

Plug-In Solar Is a Separate Category

From 27th August 2026, plug-in solar became legal across Great Britain under a new route. Government says each kit can provide up to 800W of power. That is useful for small-scale generation, but it should not be confused with a conventional multi-kilowatt ground-mounted array connected through a dedicated inverter and designed around whole-home demand.

What Makes Garden Solar More Expensive?

Energy Saving Trust specifically notes that ground-mounted costs are harder to predict because variables such as the mounting frame and distance from the house matter. In practice, the cost can also be affected by:

  • ground conditions and foundations;
  • trenching and cable protection;
  • fencing or impact protection;
  • planning drawings or an application where needed;
  • longer electrical cable runs;
  • access for plant and installation equipment;
  • drainage or flood-risk considerations;
  • security requirements.

When Garden Solar Makes the Most Sense

We would seriously consider ground-mounted solar where the roof is heavily shaded, too small, architecturally unsuitable, due for replacement, or simply cannot accommodate the generation needed. It can also suit rural and semi-rural properties with open land and a straightforward cable route.

Conversely, if the roof is sound, unshaded and already offers a strong orientation, using the roof often preserves garden space and avoids groundworks.
