Are There Any Grants for Solar Panels in 2026?

There is no universal UK Government grant that gives every homeowner money towards solar panels in 2026. However, targeted schemes can fund solar for eligible households and organisations. In England, the Warm Homes: Local Grant can include fully funded solar panels for qualifying privately owned homes; ECO4 can fund solar PV in specific project circumstances; Wales has the Nest scheme; Scotland's main Home Energy Scotland scheme no longer offers new funding for ordinary solar PV or battery storage; and Northern Ireland currently has no general homeowner solar grant.
This is exactly the kind of topic where old articles become misleading quickly. At Sustainable Energy Engineering, we have therefore rebuilt this guide around schemes that are actually current on 28th August 2026 and separated genuine grants from VAT relief, export tariffs and commercial programmes.

Solar Funding in 2026: Quick Guide
- General UK homeowner grant: no dedicated universal solar-panel grant.
- England: Warm Homes: Local Grant can fund solar panels for eligible low-income/private homes with EPC D-G where local funding is available.
- Great Britain: ECO4 remains live to 31 December 2026, but solar PV eligibility is conditional and not a simple standalone grant for everyone.
- Wales: Nest can provide free improvements including solar panels to qualifying households.
- Scotland: new Home Energy Scotland funding for ordinary solar PV and energy storage ended in June 2024.
- Northern Ireland: no general financial support is currently available to homeowners specifically to install domestic solar PV.
- VAT: qualifying installed solar remains at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
- SEG: export payments are valuable but are not a grant.
First: A Grant, a Tax Relief and an Export Tariff Are Different Things
Solar funding articles often mix three completely different forms of support:

England: Warm Homes Local Grant Can Include Solar Panels
The Warm Homes: Local Grant is one of the most relevant live routes in England. GOV.UK says eligible households can receive free energy-saving improvements if they are on a low income, receive certain benefits or live in certain postcode areas.
The basic property rules include:
- the home is in England;
- it is privately owned, either owner-occupied or privately rented;
- it has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G;
- household income is usually £36,000 a year or less, although postcode and benefit routes can also apply.
If eligible and the council has funding, the authority arranges a survey and can include solar panels among the recommended improvements. The council organises and pays for the agreed work, although landlords may need to contribute in some cases.
North East Warm Homes Funding Is Real and Current
The July 2026 government allocation list includes local authorities across the North East. Published allocations include:

The published list also includes Newcastle upon Tyne, although the government page currently displays a truncated figure in the text extraction we reviewed. We have therefore not reproduced that number here rather than guess it.
Allocation Does Not Mean Automatic Entitlement
A council receiving funding does not mean every resident can claim a solar installation. The property and household still need to pass the scheme's eligibility and assessment process, and the local authority decides the appropriate package of measures.
ECO4 Can Include Solar — But the Rules Are Specific
Ofgem's current ECO4 Delivery Guidance version 4.0 reflects the extension of ECO4 to 31 December 2026. Solar PV is an eligible measure in certain ECO4 projects, but it is not a universal standalone solar voucher.
The current guidance says solar PV can be eligible where the property's heating arrangement meets specified electric-heating conditions, including certain heat-pump, high-heat-retention storage-heater or qualifying electric heating situations. Installers delivering microgeneration measures must also be MCS-accredited (or use an alternative qualifying certification route) and follow the relevant requirements.
That is why we would never tell a homeowner “ECO4 gives everyone free solar”. Eligibility is project-specific.
Wales: Nest Can Include Free Solar Panels
Welsh Government guidance says the Nest scheme provides free advice and can provide free home improvements to qualifying households, including solar panels. Eligibility depends on household and property circumstances.
Climate Action Wales also states that Nest is aimed at households most in need, while Green Homes Wales offers interest-free loans and expert support for wider home improvements including solar panels.
These are Welsh schemes, so households should use the current Welsh Government eligibility routes rather than UK-wide solar-grant websites that may mix old and new programmes.
Scotland: The Old Solar-PV Funding Advice Is Now Outdated
This is one of the biggest corrections to the older version of this page.
Scottish Government monitoring confirms that the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme no longer provides new funding offers for solar PV or energy storage. An August 2026 Scottish Government information release specifically refers to the solar-PV element of the scheme closing in June 2024.
The current Home Energy Scotland scheme still supports clean heating and energy-efficiency measures, but an article saying Scottish homeowners can simply claim several thousand pounds for a standalone solar PV installation is now outdated.
Northern Ireland: No General Homeowner Solar Grant
Nidirect's current guidance states that there is no financial support available for homeowners who wish to generate their own electricity through domestic renewable technologies such as solar panels.
Zero-rate VAT has been extended to Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework, so qualifying installations can still benefit from the tax relief. Northern Ireland also has wider energy-efficiency schemes, but they should not be misrepresented as a universal solar-PV grant.
0% VAT Is Not a Grant — But It Still Reduces Upfront Cost
HMRC currently applies a 0% rate to qualifying installed solar panels and electrical storage batteries until 31 March 2027. This is automatic tax treatment where the conditions are met; it is not a pot of money you apply for.
The practical effect is still significant because a qualifying installation avoids the standard VAT charge during the temporary period.
The Smart Export Guarantee Is Also Not a Grant
The Smart Export Guarantee allows eligible small-scale generators in Great Britain to be paid for electricity exported to the grid. Ofgem requires certain suppliers to offer SEG tariffs, while suppliers set their own rates and contract terms.
SEG helps the lifetime economics of solar but does not pay the installation cost upfront. It should therefore sit in the savings model, not in a “grant amount” box.
What About Commercial Solar Grants in the North East?

Should You Wait for a Grant Before Installing Solar?
That depends on your circumstances. If you are likely to qualify for a fully funded programme, checking eligibility first is sensible. But if you are not eligible, waiting indefinitely for a universal grant that may never appear can delay bill savings.
Energy Saving Trust's current guidance is clear: there is no dedicated UK Government solar-panel grant for everyone, but support can exist inside other schemes.
How to Check Whether a Solar Funding Offer Is Genuine
Grant Verification Checklist
- Does the scheme appear on GOV.UK, a devolved-government site, Ofgem, your council or another accountable public body?
- Is the scheme currently open, not simply an archived page?
- Does it explicitly list solar PV as an eligible measure?
- Are the household, property and EPC rules clear?
- Does the installer have the accreditation required by the scheme?
- Is the grant paid before/after installation, and are you expected to contribute?
- Are there landlord-consent or owner-occupier rules?
- Is someone calling a tax relief or SEG payment a “grant”?
- Are there pressure-selling tactics or unexplained finance agreements?

Our August 2026 Solar Grants Verdict
The answer to “are there any grants for solar panels?” is yes, but not a universal one.
England has targeted Warm Homes and ECO4 routes. Wales has Nest and other support. Scotland has changed materially and ordinary new Home Energy Scotland funding for solar PV/storage has ended. Northern Ireland does not currently offer a general homeowner PV grant. Businesses and community organisations can have separate regional opportunities.
