Air & Ground Source Heat Pumps
 |
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP), transfer heat from one place to another at very low cost. They make use of renewable energy stored in the ground, providing one of the most energy-efficient ways of heating buildings. For every 1kW of electrical energy used to power the unit, they transfer 3-4 kW of heat energy!
They therefore have an efficiency of up to 300%!

Heat pump systems use a compressor like a refrigerator, to transfer heat from outside to inside. Like a refrigerator 'in reverse' - in order to heat properties. They can extract heat from the air, from the ground and even from water.
Ground source heat pumps are the most efficient. They are very efficient , 3-4 units of heat for every unit of electricity supplied to the pump. Anyone using night-storage heaters for space heating could reduce their heating bill by up to 75%.
They can be installed in most of the UK, using a borehole or shallow trenches or, less commonly, by extracting heat from a pond or lake. Heat collecting pipes in a closed loop, containing water (with a little antifreeze) are used to extract this stored energy, which can then be used to provide space heating and domestic hot water. For a particularly environmental solution, green electricity can be purchased.
They have very low maintenance costs and can be expected to provide reliable and environmentally friendly heating for in excess of 20 years.
Ground Source Heat Pumps work best with heating systems which are optimised to run at a lower water temperature than is commonly used in UK boiler and radiator systems. As such, they make an ideal partner for underfloor heating systems.
Via the Low Carbon Building Programme a Grant of 30% of costs up to £1,200 maximum, is available to offset the cost of installation. To qualify for grants, the LCBP specify that all homes must have a minimum of energy efficiency measures already installed. To assist with this we offer a turnkey solution to complete all these measures for a very competitive price. See our Energy Efficiency page for details.
